They are now manufacturing 20 crores - 200 million - doses of Oxford-AstraZeneca coronavirus vaccine and are seeking phase 3 human approval from India 's drug controller, says they intend to declare their own vaccine by the end of 2021.
How long will it take?
It'll be a long time if anybody receives a vaccine because of the number of doses that need to be given. It includes challenges in the distribution of doses in all parts of the globe and does not automatically mean that the first vaccine to be approved is the safest one. There are many different research approaches to the production of the Covid-19 vaccine, and we will have to wait and see.
Adar Poonawalla said that the Oxford-AstraZeneca coronavirus vaccine will be branded as Covishield and they hope it will be a successful, immunologic vaccine that is viable for mass use. Poonawalla said that they expect to launch it by the end of 2020 and by the first quarter Covishield will begin to meet the masses.
On Friday, SII inched a step closer to human trials in India as an expert advisory committee to Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) approved the revised protocols submitted by the pharma giant. “With the government fast-tracking everything, we are hoping to get approvals soon, post which we will begin phase 3 human trials here in India this month,” says Poonawalla.
It makes us happy to hear the news that he will distribute 50% vaccine to India and the remaining 50% globally.
